How's it growing? Were you able to enjoy a fresh herb garden this summer? Nothing beats cooking a delicious meal with the freshest herbs possible! This year we're enjoying an exciting new addition at the Secret Garden! Earlier this spring, over 1,100 herbs were planted in our garden oasis! The three perennial herbs that were planted are sage, peppermint and lemon balm. Of those herbs, sage is my personal favorite. This herb, though not the most popular, has so many amazing properties and uses! During my research I was blown away by how versatile, delicious and timeless sage is! Read about our favorite tips and facts and share yours with us! Stay tuned for a future newsletter with photos of our first distillation of the 3 herbs into essential oils!

Health Benefits of Sage

Sage is loaded with great vitamins and nutrients that are essential for your body. This amazing herb has been used for centuries around the world. Ancient cultures, like the Egyptians, discovered what this herb has to offer and utilized its properties to treat stomach and digestive issues, menstrual cramps, heartburn, gingivitis and even asthma when ingested! But wait there's more! Sage is also great when applied topically! Sage essential oil can strengthen you hair, keep you skin healthy and wards off acne and blemishes. Sage is commonly used in Native American cleansing traditions. It is thought that burning sage creates a more healthy, positive atmosphere.

Our 4 Favorite ways to use Sage!

  1. Steep for a delicious cup of tea! Mix it up and add a few fresh sage leaves to a cup of your favorite black tea! Or steep fresh sage and mint leaves (add chamomile for a bedtime tea) and add a dash of honey or agave nectar for a sweet treat.
  2. Sage is great for cooking and baking! The opportunities are endless with this tasty herb! Check out this Pinterest board for some extra inspiration! We've got recipes for sage lemonade, shortbread, soups & sauces and so much more!
  3. Sage is the perfect addition to your garden! This little herb has so much to offer in your yard and as an added bonus, sage is a perennial plant and comes back each year.  No need to replant! Sage attracts pollinators like butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. This not only helps your garden grow bigger and stronger but supports the wellbeing of our pollinator populations. Sage is also known to deter pests that munch on your veggies like cabbage moths and carrot flies!
  4. Incorporate into a smudge stick! Burning sage has been used for spiritual cleansing of the mind, body and home for centuries! Native Americans used sage burning as a ritual to remove negative energy, generate wisdom and clarity and promote a healing atmosphere. Follow the instructions in the video below to make a gorgeous smudge stick of your own!

Give these tips and tricks a try! Then share your favorite ways to use sage in the comments below! We love hearing all the ways people use our plants after they leave the estate. I loved how you mentioned that it helps with promoting a healing atmosphere. My sister is all about things that are spiritual, and she was telling me last night about how she feels a lot of negative energy in her home, and she was wondering how she can get rid of it. I'll make sure to pass this information along to her so that she can look into burning sage in her home.
